Why Your Gym Is Not Showing Up on Google Maps

PickMyGym team · Updated Oct 30, 2026 · 7 min read

Short answer: Most gyms that do not show on Google Maps have one of five problems: the profile is not verified, it is suspended, the category is wrong, the searcher is too far away, or other gyms simply look stronger. Search your exact gym name first. If you show up for your name but not for "gym near me," it is a ranking problem, not a missing listing.

Key takeaways

  • First test: search your exact gym name on Google Maps.
  • Not found by name usually means verification, suspension or duplicates.
  • Found by name but not by "gym near me" means ranking.
  • Google ranks local results by relevance, distance and prominence.

How do you tell what kind of problem you have?

Do a two-step test on your phone, logged out of Google if you can:

  1. Search your exact gym name on Google Maps.
  2. Search the main thing you offer plus your town, like "jiu jitsu Hoboken."
What you see Likely cause
Not found by name Not verified, suspended, or a duplicate
Found by name, not by service Wrong category, weak profile, or few reviews
Found only when standing at the gym Distance, normal for busy areas

This guide is part of our Google Business Profile for gyms series. Start there if you have never set up your profile.

Is your Google Business Profile verified?

An unverified profile may not show to the public. Log in at business.google.com and look for a "Get verified" or "Verify" button. Google may ask for a video, phone call, text or email, depending on the business (Google Business Profile Help).

Tip for gyms: when Google asks for a video, show your sign, the street, the inside of the gym and proof you can manage it, like unlocking the door. Do it in one continuous clip.

Has your gym listing been suspended?

Suspensions often happen after a change that looks suspicious, like a new name, a new address or keyword stuffing. Signs: you see a warning in your dashboard, or the listing disappears from Maps.

Common gym causes:

  • Adding keywords to your business name, like "Iron Gym Best Personal Training Austin"
  • Using a virtual office or PO box as your address
  • Listing a home address as a storefront when members do not visit there

Google's guidelines for representing your business explain what is allowed.

Do you have duplicate listings?

Two listings for the same gym split your reviews and confuse Google. They often come from an old owner, a moved location, or a coach who created one by mistake. Search your name, phone number and old addresses to find them. Then ask Google to merge or remove the extra one.

Is your category wrong?

Your main category is one of the biggest ranking factors you control. If a Krav Maga school picks "Gym" as its main category, it may not show for "self defense classes." Pick the category that matches your main offer, then add a few extras that are true.

Examples:

  • Martial arts school: "Martial arts school" main, then "Self defense school" or "Kickboxing school" if true
  • Yoga studio: "Yoga studio" main, then "Meditation center" if you run classes
  • CrossFit box: "Gym" or "Fitness center", check what top boxes near you use

Is distance the real problem?

Sometimes. Google says local results are based on relevance, distance and prominence (Google Business Profile Help). If a searcher is across town, closer gyms may rank first. You cannot change where you are, but you can grow prominence with reviews, photos and mentions so you show over a wider area.

A service-area business, like a mobile personal trainer, should hide its home address and set a service area instead.

Is your profile weaker than nearby gyms?

If you show for your name but not for "gym near me," compare yourself with the top 3 gyms on the map:

  • How many reviews do they have, and how recent?
  • How many photos?
  • Do they post updates?
  • Is their website linked and clear?

Then close the gap. Steady reviews are the biggest lever. Our get more gym reviews guide shows how.

Are your hours or address wrong?

Wrong details can quietly hurt you. If your hours say closed when you are open, Google may show you less for people searching right now. If your pin sits in the wrong spot, people near you may not see you. Check:

  • Regular hours and holiday hours.
  • The map pin sits on your real front door.
  • Suite or unit number is in the address.

Does your website help or hurt?

It helps when it matches your profile. Google and AI tools compare your listing with your site. Make sure your site shows the same name, address and phone in text, your hours, and what you teach. See our gym website checklist.

Common mistakes

  • Never finishing verification
  • Keywords stuffed into the business name
  • A main category that does not match your main classes
  • Two listings for the same gym
  • A different phone number on the website than on Google

Quick checklist

  • Search your exact name on Google Maps
  • Confirm the profile is verified
  • Check for suspension warnings
  • Find and merge duplicates
  • Pick the right main category
  • Match name, address and phone on your site
  • Add 1 new review a week

Frequently asked questions

How long until a new gym shows on Google Maps? After you verify, it often shows within days. Ranking well for "gym near me" can take weeks to months.

Can I pay to show up on Google Maps? You can run Google Ads, which show as sponsored spots. Normal map rankings cannot be bought.

Why do I show up for some people but not others? Distance and search history change results. Test from different spots, or ask a friend in another part of town.

Does changing my gym name hurt my listing? A real name change is fine. Adding extra keywords to your name can lead to a suspension.

Can a home gym show on Google Maps? Only if members actually come there, or if you set it up as a service-area business without a public address.
