What is llms.txt? A simple guide for gym and studio owners

When someone asks an AI tool like ChatGPT "best gym near me for beginners," it looks for clear facts about local gyms. Your website is one of the main places it looks. An llms.txt file is one small, cheap way to hand AI tools those facts in plain words.

This guide explains what the file is, what it can and can't do, and how to add one in about 10 minutes.

What llms.txt is

llms.txt is a short text file that sits on your website at an address like yourgym.com/llms.txt. It sums up your business in plain language for AI tools. Think of it as a front-desk cheat sheet: who you are, what you offer, where you are, and which pages matter most.

It is not code, and you don't need a developer to write it. If you can write a text message, you can write this file.

Let's be honest about what it does

llms.txt is a newer, proposed standard. Some AI tools may read it, but AI companies have not all said they do. Google says its Search does not use llms.txt, so it will not help or hurt your Google ranking. And nobody can promise it will get your gym named in an answer. So treat it like this:

If you only have time for one fix this month, fix your Google Business Profile first. If you have 10 more minutes, add llms.txt.

How common is it?

Of more than 100 gym and studio websites we scanned, about two in three had no llms.txt file. That is our sample, not a national survey. Goncalo Esteves is the founder of PickMyGym, and he runs a Krav Maga studio in New Jersey. When he ran the check on his own studio site, a missing llms.txt file was one of the things it flagged.

What to put in your llms.txt

Keep it short. Use facts, not slogans. Here is a fill-in template:

# [Your Gym Name]

> [One sentence: what you teach, who it's for, and where.]
> Example: Beginner-friendly boxing and strength gym for adults and teens in [Town], [State].

## Basics
- Address: [Street, Town, State, ZIP]
- Phone: [Phone]

A few tips:

  1. Match everything else. Your name, address, phone and hours should be the same as your Google Business Profile, website footer and social pages. If they don't match, fix those first.
  2. Say who it's for. "Kids 5-12," "women only," "beginners welcome" and "competition team" are the words people type into ChatGPT.
  3. Give a price or a "from" price. People ask "how much is a gym near me?" You don't need a full price list.
  4. Update it when things change. New hours or a new class? Change the file the same day.

How to add it to your site

Save the file as plain text named exactly llms.txt. Then put it at the top level of your site, so it opens at yourgym.com/llms.txt.

When it's live, open yourgym.com/llms.txt in your browser. If you see your text, you're done.

"We already get calls. Why bother?"

Fair question. If your phone rings, something is working. But you only hear from people who found you. You never hear from the ones who asked an AI tool, got a list of other gyms, and called them instead. A 10-minute file won't fix that alone. It is one small, cheap step that may help some AI tools describe your gym correctly.

FAQ

Is llms.txt the same as robots.txt?
No. robots.txt tells bots which pages they may or may not visit. llms.txt is a plain-language summary of your business. They do different jobs, and you can have both. Make sure your robots.txt isn't blocking AI tools by accident.

Will llms.txt get my gym recommended by ChatGPT?
Nobody can promise that. AI tools don't share their rules, and answers change. llms.txt makes your facts easy to read. Your Google profile, reviews, website text and other sites that mention you still matter a lot.

Do I need a developer?
Usually not. You write it in any text app. Uploading it can take a few clicks, or one email to your host or web person.

How long should it be?
Short. Most gyms can fit it on one screen. Clear facts beat long text.

Can it hurt my Google ranking?
We have seen nothing saying it does. It is a plain text file. Just make sure every fact in it is correct and matches the rest of your listings.
