How to get your gym recommended by ChatGPT: a 9-step checklist
Step 1: Fill out your Google Business Profile
Google AI answers and many AI tools lean on local business info.
- Pick the right main category (for example "Martial arts school" or "Gym"), then add other categories that fit.
- Keep your hours, holiday hours, phone and website link up to date.
- Write a short description: what you teach, who it is for, and where you are.
- Add real photos of your space, your classes and your coaches.
- Post updates and answer the questions people ask on your profile.
Step 2: Use the same name, address and phone everywhere
Use the exact same business name, address and phone number on your website, Google, Facebook, Instagram, Yelp and any directories. If one listing has an old address, fix it.
Step 3: Write your website the way people ask questions
AI tools quote clear, specific sentences. They do not quote vague slogans. Your site should plainly answer these questions. Put the answers in text, not only in pictures or PDFs, because AI tools read text.
- What do you teach, and who is it for (kids, adults, women, beginners, fighters)?
- Where are you, and which towns do you serve?
- What does it cost, or how does a trial or intro class work?
- What is the schedule, and how do I book?
- Who are the coaches, and what is their background?
Step 4: Add an FAQ page
Answer the questions you hear at the front desk, like "Do I need to be in shape?", "What should I wear?" and "Is it safe for kids?" Give one short, direct answer per question.
Step 5: Get reviews that say something specific
Ask happy members for a Google review. Suggest they mention what class they took and how it went. A review like "great beginner Krav Maga class, the coaches explain everything" tells an AI much more than "5 stars!" Reply to every review.
Step 6: Add basic structured data (schema)
Add LocalBusiness (or SportsActivityLocation or ExerciseGym) schema with your name, address, phone, hours and website. Most website builders support this through a plugin or a setting. It helps machines read your details without guessing.
Step 7: Do not block AI crawlers by mistake
Check your robots.txt file. Some site settings or security plugins block bots like OAI-SearchBot or PerplexityBot. If you want AI tools to mention you, let their search crawlers in.
Step 8: Get mentioned in other places
Local news, your federation or association directory, event pages and partner businesses all count. AI answers often use more than one source.
Step 9: Test it yourself every month
Ask ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google: "best [your style] gym in [your town]" and "[your gym name] reviews". Write down what they say, whether it is right, and who they suggest instead. Fix anything wrong at the source: your website or your Google profile.

Questions
Can I pay to be recommended by ChatGPT?
Not in its normal answers. ChatGPT does not sell spots in its regular answers. What you can control is how clear, consistent and well-reviewed your gym is online.
How long does it take to show up?
There is no set timeline. Changes to your Google profile can show up fairly fast. AI tools update their sources on their own schedules, so test again each month.
Do I need a new website?
Usually not. Most gyms need clearer text, an FAQ, correct contact details and schema more than a new design.
Does social media count?
It helps people trust you, but AI tools mostly rely on your website, Google profile, reviews and other sites that mention you. Do not keep key info like prices and schedule only on Instagram.
What is the most important step?
A complete, correct Google Business Profile, plus a website that answers "what, who, where, how much and how to start" in plain text.
Is there a quick way to check my gym?
