Why ChatGPT recommends chain gyms over independent gyms
What owners are seeing
A gym owner on Reddit described asking ChatGPT for gyms in their area: "it recommended an Orange Theory and a 24 Hour Fitness, but mine did not get mentioned, like why is that". Many other owners replied with similar experiences (source below). Nobody outside the AI companies knows the exact ranking rules, but the pattern below is consistent with how these tools say they work: they search the web, read pages and summarize what they find.
What chains do that most independents don't
- One page per location, with the address, phone and hours written as text.
- Prices or "memberships from $X" visible, so an AI can answer "how much is it?"
- Class types and schedules as text, not a screenshot.
- An FAQ that answers beginner questions directly.
- Structured data (schema) marking the page as a gym at a specific address.
- Consistent listings (Google, Apple Maps, Yelp, directories) and a steady flow of reviews.
What to fix first
- Write one plain sentence near the top of your homepage: "[Gym] offers [strength training, classes, personal training] for [who] in [Town, State]."
- Put your address and phone as text in the footer, written exactly like your Google Business Profile.
- Publish a starting price, even a range.
- Add an FAQ with 6-10 real questions people ask at the front desk.
- Add LocalBusiness / ExerciseGym schema with address, phone, hours and links to your social profiles.
- Make sure robots.txt does not block AI crawlers (GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot) unless you mean to.

Questions
Can I pay ChatGPT to recommend my gym?
Not as of October 2026 in the normal answers. What you can control is how clearly your website and listings describe your gym.
Does a small gym have any chance against chains?
Yes. AI answers often name smaller local businesses when their information is clear, consistent and backed by reviews. Being specific (e.g. "beginner-friendly strength gym for adults over 40 in [Town]") helps you match the questions people actually ask.
How do I check what AI tools can read on my site?
Run the free Gym AI Score. It checks the public signals AI assistants and Google rely on and lists what is missing.
