How to Check What AI Says About Your Gym

PickMyGym team · Updated Oct 30, 2026 · 7 min read

Short answer: Ask the AI tools the same questions a new member would ask, like "best kids martial arts near Plano," and write down if your gym shows up, what it says, and who shows up instead. Test ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google's AI answers and any other tool your members use. Repeat once a month with the same questions so you can see change over time.

Key takeaways

  • Use the words real members use, not your brand name only.
  • Test from a private or logged-out window when you can.
  • Record answers in a simple sheet every month.
  • Wrong facts in AI answers usually come from wrong facts online.

Why should you check what AI says about your gym?

Because people are asking. Someone new to town may ask ChatGPT "Where can I take beginner yoga near downtown Raleigh?" before they ever open Google Maps. If the answer lists 3 studios and you are not one of them, you lose that person without knowing it.

Google also shows AI answers at the top of many searches, called AI Overviews and AI Mode. Google says the same SEO basics apply to showing up in these features (Google Search Central). This guide is part of our hub on how to get your gym recommended by ChatGPT.

Which AI tools should you test?

Start with the ones your members are most likely to use:

  1. ChatGPT, with search on
  2. Google, looking at AI Overviews at the top of results
  3. Perplexity
  4. Gemini, Claude, Copilot or Grok if you have time

Each tool can give a different answer, because they pull from different sources.

What questions should you ask?

Ask the way a real person would. Write 8 to 10 questions and use the same ones every month. Mix these types:

Discovery questions (the most important):

  • "Best {your gym type} in {your city}"
  • "{Gym type} near {neighborhood} for beginners"
  • "Kids {martial art} classes in {city}"
  • "Affordable {gym type} in {city} with a free trial"

Brand questions:

  • "What is {your gym name}?"
  • "Is {your gym name} good for beginners?"
  • "How much does {your gym name} cost?"

Comparison questions:

  • "{Your gym} vs {competitor}"

Example: a Pilates studio in Columbus might ask "best reformer Pilates in Columbus for beginners" and "how much is a reformer class at {studio name}?"

How do you run a fair test?

Small changes can change results, so keep it steady:

  • Use a private or logged-out window when the tool allows it, so past chats do not shape the answer.
  • Ask each question in a fresh chat.
  • Set your location to your town, or include the town in the question.
  • Ask each question twice. AI answers can vary.
  • Take a screenshot of each answer.

What should you write down?

Use a simple sheet with these columns:

Date Tool Question Are we listed? Position What it said about us Who else is listed Sources it cited

The "sources it cited" column is gold. If Perplexity cites a Yelp page or a local blog for your competitor, that tells you where to get listed.

What if AI gets your facts wrong?

Find where the wrong fact lives and fix it there. AI tools repeat what they find online. Common errors:

  • Old hours or prices: update your website, Google profile and Facebook page.
  • Wrong address: usually an old directory listing. Fix it everywhere.
  • Wrong classes: your website may not list your programs clearly in text.
  • Says you closed: check for a duplicate or old Google listing.

Then wait. Updates can take weeks to show in AI answers.

What if AI recommends your competitor instead?

Compare what they have that you do not. Look at their website, reviews and listings. Often the winner has:

  • More recent Google reviews that mention the class type
  • A clear website with prices and an FAQ
  • Mentions on local sites and directories

Are you blocking AI tools from reading your site?

Check this before anything else. Your website's robots.txt file can block AI crawlers. OpenAI lists its crawlers, like OAI-SearchBot for search and GPTBot for training, and explains how site owners control them (OpenAI). Perplexity has a similar page for PerplexityBot (Perplexity). Open yoursite.com/robots.txt and look for "Disallow" lines next to those names.

How often should you check?

Once a month is enough for most gyms. Check again 4 to 6 weeks after a big change, like a new website, a name change or a push for reviews. Keep your questions the same so the results compare fairly.

Common mistakes

  • Only asking about your gym by name
  • Testing once and never again
  • Using a logged-in account full of past chats about your gym
  • Not noting which sources the AI cited
  • Trying to fix the AI instead of fixing the facts online

Quick checklist

  • Write 8 to 10 real member questions
  • Test ChatGPT, Google and Perplexity
  • Use fresh, logged-out chats when you can
  • Record results and cited sources in a sheet
  • Fix wrong facts at the source
  • Check robots.txt for blocked AI crawlers
  • Repeat every month

See exactly what to fix. The Free AI Health Check looks at how AI tools and Google see your gym: your website facts, schema, crawler access, Google profile and reviews. You get a plain list of what to fix first. Want the step-by-step version? The $19 Fix Kit walks you through each fix.

Frequently asked questions

Why does ChatGPT give a different answer each time? AI tools write a new answer each time and may search different pages. That is why you ask each question twice and track trends, not single answers.

Can I ask ChatGPT to add my gym? No. Telling it in a chat does not change what it shows other people. You change answers by fixing your facts online.

How long until changes show up in AI answers? It varies by tool. Some changes show in a few weeks, others take a few months.

Should I test from my phone or computer? Either works. Just use the same one each month so results compare fairly.

Is AI search more important than Google Maps? Not yet for most gyms. Do both. The same fixes, like clear facts and steady reviews, help in both places.
